Well, finally a place to call home. We moved in almost 4 weeks ago. Things for the most part are put away and unpacked. We ordered the chicks and they arrived a week ago. There are several different breeds. Buff Orpingtons, Blue Andalusians, Partridge Rocks, Silver Laced Wyndottes, Black Australorps and one mystery chick, who is a true mystery because we can't figure out which chick they provided for our "mystery chick" from the hatchery. They are already starting to get feathers so we should be able to figure it out soon.
The snow has pretty much disappeared so we are just getting a look at the property we bought without the blanket of white. So far, no regrets. The front yard is a big mess. We will getting a septic system so the hole won't be there forever!
There certainly have been some surprises. We've been finding a lot of "cow parts" scattered about. I wasn't sure what to make of it at first. Now that we have met a few locals we have been told that the guy who owned the property (the house was a forclosure and then flipped) wasn't caring for his cows very well. Apparently he stopped milking them and then slowly starved most of them. He's now our neighbor and only has a few left. He currently has a dead cow on the property and the few he has left are pathetically thin. He's been reported several times but nothing is ever done.
On a lighter note, I have been looking into buying some sheep for breeding. I would like Merino for the wool they provide. The only problem seems to be finding them. They don't appear to be very common in Minnesota. I would think this would be a good climate for them. A little more research is going to be necessary! More info to come....
